What To Look Forward to at L.A. Times' The Taste

[caption id=“” align=“aligncenter” width=“500”] Paul Sanguinetti, Jaymee Mandeville, Marcos Tello, Brian Summers at last year’s Cocktail Confidential Competition[/caption] Today’s the day. That is, the last day to get your tickets to this weekend’s events at L.A. Times’ The Taste before they go up in price! Also, there are some events (tomorrow night’s limited-capacity opening night, Flavors of L.A. and the weekend pass) that are sold out, so don’t snooze on it; get your tickets now while you can. Last week, media got treated to a special preview in the L.A. Times’ Test Kitchen with bites from Dog Haus Dogs, Coni’Seafood, Creme Caramel and more. Needless to say, it got us pretty piqued for this weekend. Whether you’re celebrating going season, BBQ for Labor Day or going for the libations, here are the particular appearances I’m looking forward to:

  • Field to Fork – Hosted by Russ Parsons, Times Food Editor, and Michael Cimarusti (Providence, Connie and Ted’s) - Sat., Aug. 31st, 11 AM to 3 PM

[caption id=“” align=“alignright” width=“240”] Ceviche with Smoked Marlin Pate - Coni’Seafood[/caption] Though it’s hard to say which progressive restaurants aren’t doing farm-to-table, Field to Fork focuses on that concept. Attend this Saturday in the daytime and see what sets these restaurants apart. Look for demos by Ari Taymor (Alma), Sherry Yard (Helms Bakery, formerly Spago), Ray Garcia (FIG), and Cimarusti, which will take place on the New York lot. They’ll also participate in a panel, “Fish or Famine: Sustainability & the Seafood on Your Plate” with Parsons moderating. Wine experts will be present at two tasting sessions and share tips for pairing. You can look forward to tastes from restaurants like Canelé, DOMA, Farmshop, good girl dinette, Hamasaku, Momed, Muddy Leek, Nobu, RivaBella and The Curious Palate.

  • Labor Day Block Party – Hosted by Noelle Carter, Times Test Kitchen Director, and Nancy Silverton (Osteria Mozza, Pizzeria Mozza) - Sun., Sept. 1st, 11 AM to 3 PM

[caption id=“” align=“alignright” width=“240”] Ube Pudding - Creme Caramel[/caption]

It’s the end of summer but what better way than to celebrate barbecue with a panel led by Carter called “Going Whole Hog: Tales from Masters of Competition BBQ?” Ryan Chester (The Rub Co.), Sylvia Curry (Lady of Q) and Neil Strawder (Bigmista’s Barbecue) will offer their insights. Cooking demos by Silverton and Fred Eric (D’Elish), and Times Columnist Steve Lopez’s crowd-pleasing Firehouse Cook-off will offer helpful tips. I’d look for tastes from restaurants like BOA Steakhouse, Brite Spot, Café Gratitude, Coni’Seafood, Freddy Smalls: Bar & Kitchen, Haven Gastropub and Kings Row Gastropub.

  • Cocktail Confidential – Hosted by Betty Hallock, Times Deputy Food Editor, Jessica Gelt, Times Food & Night Life Writer and Cocktail Chef Matthew Biancaniello - Sun., Sept. 1st, 7:30 to 11:30 PM

Let’s hear it for bartending! A craft cocktail demo will be presented by Hallock, Gelt and Biancaniello. Also present will be L.A.’s greatest chef-bartender pairings - John Sedlar and Julian Cox (Rivera), Kuniko Yagi and Brandyn Tepper (Hinoki & the Bird), Michael Voltaggio and Gabrilla Mlynarczyk - who will share their inspiration for food-drink combinations. Look for bites from new and old restaurants in the L.A. circuit like Chi Lin, Cliff’s Edge, Jitlada, L&E Oyster Bar, Mexikosher, The Pub at Golden Road Brewing, Stella Barra and The Corner Door.

The next step? Go here and purchase your tickets. tomorrow, the tickets go up by $20 so procrastinators (like me) will lose out. L.A. Times’ subscribers are in luck, because you save 20%! Also, don’t forget to #hashtag# your events with “#TasteLA” and use the Twitter handle @TheTasteLA for consideration to be included in The L.A. Times’ Weekend Eats edition of the Daily Dish blog (and to carry out your usual social media duties)!
